Native-born Americans commit up to four times more crimes than undocumented immigrants

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences* reported that, compared with undocumented immigrants, native-born Americans are

  • More than 2 times as likely to be arrested for violent crimes,
  • 2.5 times more likely to be arrested for drug crimes, and
  • More than 4 times more likely to be arrested for property crimes.

So the next time you hear someone complain about “immigrant crime waves,” tell them this: today’s immigrants aren’t driving crime rates. Native-born Americansthe descendants of earlier immigrant wavesare the ones committing the majority of crimes.
