Palm Beach County Democratic Party Executive Committee, April Meeting Notes

Palm Beach County Democratic Party Executive Committee, April Meeting Notes

The Palm Beach County Democratic Executive Committee gathered for its April meeting, with Chair Howard Richman presiding over a packed agenda that ranged from housekeeping updates to a neighborhood outreach initiative, and a lopsided resolution that put the local party on record against AI data centers.

By the numbers: Philip from the Supervisor of Elections office reported the county’s voter rolls stand at 872,185 registered voters, with Democrats holding a slim but meaningful edge of 11,649 voters over Republicans.

The headline vote

The evening’s most decisive moment came when Nathan Galang brought forward a resolution calling for a moratorium on AI data centers in Palm Beach County. The measure passed overwhelmingly, 103–3. Galang, who noted he had recently met with Commissioner Joel Flores on the issue, said the committee would follow up with a cover letter to Democratic elected officials countywide and a press release. A press conference outside the county commission building was also floated as a next step.

A resolution that couldn’t get off the ground

Ian Blake’s resolution proposing monthly community forums, featuring panels of experts discussing current issues from a Democratic perspective, failed to gain traction, going down 31–68. Critics raised concerns about the frequency of the forums, the process for selecting topics, and the drain on the committee’s time and resources.

Neighborhood Ambassador Program moves forward

Janet Waxman and Mark Beaumont pitched the Neighborhood Ambassador Program, which would recruit neighborhood ambassadors to make personal contact with voters, particularly in underperforming precincts and areas without precinct organizers. The concept drew on a similar effort from 2018–2020 with Palm Beach Indivisibles, and supporters shared examples of success in communities like Highland Beach, where 20 volunteers reportedly worked alongside precinct organizers in 2020. The program won the committee’s support, with Waxman and Beaumont directed to consult with zone leaders and refine their materials before a full launch.

Other business

Becky Jaeger reported more than 200 active voter registration volunteers, with upcoming events including a presence at the Delray Affair. Ethan Fenichel updated the committee on the ongoing transition from Mobilize to Solidarity Tech for event management and offered assistance to clubs making the switch.

Chair Richman opened the meeting by noting recent Democratic wins, citing Steve Wilson’s victory in Belle Glade and Emily Gregory’s in HD87. The committee’s treasurer reported $103,033.93 in DEC funds as of March 31st.

The next meeting is scheduled for May 7th at the Dr. Andre Fidel Civic Center in Delray Beach.
