Palm Beach County, FL – The Palm Beach County Democratic Party has unanimously passed a resolution calling for a complete moratorium on large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, citing serious concerns about rising energy costs, environmental risks, and threats to public health.
“Democrats are united in their opposition to these projects which affect health, the environment and local economies including the increased cost of energy” said Howard Richman, Chair of the Palm Beach County Democratic Party. “We will continue to fight Project Tango and other data center proposals to ensure there is transparency in the process.”
The resolution warns that these massive facilities consume extraordinary amounts of electricity, potentially equivalent to the scale of hundreds of thousands of homes, placing enormous strain on local power grids and driving up utility bills.
Despite these risks, developers behind proposed projects in Palm Beach County have refused to disclose their expected energy demands, leaving residents and local officials in the dark about the true impact on infrastructure and household costs.
The resolution also raises alarm over potential environmental and public health consequences, including pollution near residential neighborhoods and schools, as well as concerns over water usage.
At a time when our communities are being asked to conserve water it is unacceptable to allow projects that may consume or contaminate millions of gallons. Our priority must be protecting the people, not selling out to big tech.
The Palm Beach County Democratic Party is calling on all local elected officials, especially the Board of County Commissioners, to take a clear stand:
- Support a moratorium on AI data center development
- Demand full transparency from developers on energy and water usage
- Prioritize the working class, environmental safety, and long-term affordability
The resolution emphasizes that Democratic values require putting people over corporate interests, ensuring that development does not come at the expense of public health, affordability, or community stability.
